AIG Kanayo Uzuegbu Loses Battle to Cancer

Assistant Inspector General of Police Kanayo Uzuegbu, who was in charge of Zone 9, has passed away after a long battle with cancer.

His death was confirmed early today, throwing the police community into mourning.

Uzuegbu was known as a dedicated officer who served the nation for many years.

Uzuegbu fought his illness privately while continuing to carry out his duties. Colleagues described him as a strong and quiet leader who never let his condition affect his work. He reportedly passed away in a hospital surrounded by family members. The police hierarchy has since released a statement expressing deep sorrow over his loss.

Zone 9, which Uzuegbu commanded, covers several states and is a key division of the Nigeria Police Force. During his time there, he was credited with improving security coordination and reducing crime in the zone. Many officers who served under him have shared emotional tributes, calling him a mentor and a father figure.

The Nigeria Police Force has lost a number of senior officers to various illnesses in recent years. Uzuegbu’s death is a reminder of the health challenges faced by those in active service. The Inspector General of Police has ordered that flags be flown at half-mast in all Zone 9 commands. Arrangements are already being made for a full police burial.

Uzuegbu is survived by his wife and children. Fellow officers, friends, and political leaders have begun sending condolences to the family. His remains will be laid to rest in his home state after funeral rites are completed. For those who knew him, Kanayo Uzuegbu will be remembered as a brave officer who served Nigeria until the very end.
