Ex-Senator Gilbert Nnaji Switches to NDC After Brief ADC Stint
Former Senator Gilbert Nnaji, who previously represented Enugu East, has officially defected to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
This latest political move comes just four months after he had joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), signaling a rapid shift in his strategic alignment ahead of the upcoming electoral cycles in Enugu State.
Nnaji, a veteran of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for many years, cited the need for a more inclusive and progressive platform as the primary reason for his exit from the ADC. His transition to the NDC is seen by political observers as an attempt to find a more formidable structure to reassert his influence in the politics of the Enugu East Senatorial District, which he represented in the 7th and 8th National Assembly.
During a formal reception hosted by the NDC leadership, the former lawmaker emphasized that his decision was reached after extensive consultations with his core supporters and grassroots structures. He expressed confidence that the NDC offers the best opportunity to address the developmental yearnings of his constituents and to challenge the existing political status quo in the state.
The defection has stirred discussions within the Enugu political landscape, especially given the short duration of his stay in the ADC. Critics have pointed to the move as evidence of the fluid nature of Nigerian party affiliations, while supporters argue that Nnaji is simply being pragmatic in his search for a party that aligns with his current political ideology and “Renewed Hope” for his followers.
The NDC leadership has welcomed the former Senator with open arms, describing his entry as a “major catch” for the party. They believe his wealth of legislative experience and established political network will provide a significant boost to the party’s visibility and competitiveness in the South-East region as it prepares for future polls.
As Nnaji begins this new chapter, all eyes are on how this move will impact the internal dynamics of the Enugu East political bloc. His departure is a notable blow to the ADC’s ambitions in the state, even as the NDC gains a seasoned politician with a proven track record of winning elections at the senatorial level.
