Osun Youth Stabbed to Death Over N8,000 Masquerade Proceeds

The traditional Egungun festival in Ilare, Osun State, was marred by tragedy on Friday evening following a violent altercation that claimed the life of a young man identified as Bukunmi. The fatal incident occurred as a group of participants gathered to distribute the takings from their day of masquerade performance.

According to local sources, the entire conflict centered on the sharing of a mere N8,000, a meager sum that ultimately led to an irreversible loss of life.

The dispute reportedly began between Bukunmi and another youth named Pelumi, both of whom were members of the same family. As the argument over the N8,000 grew increasingly heated, a third associate, Femi, attempted to intervene to prevent the two relatives from coming to blows. However, his attempt at mediation backfired when Bukunmi allegedly turned his frustration toward Femi, physically assaulting him by striking him in the mouth.

The situation escalated rapidly in the heat of the moment when Femi allegedly produced a knife and stabbed Bukunmi. Witnesses at the scene described a chaotic scramble as bystanders attempted to intervene and save the bleeding youth. Bukunmi was rushed to a nearby medical facility in a desperate bid to save his life, but medical personnel later confirmed that he had succumbed to the severity of his injuries.

Following the stabbing, a mob of angry residents reportedly attempted to descend upon Femi in a retaliatory attack. He was narrowly rescued by operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) who were on patrol in the area. The suspect was subsequently handed over to the Nigeria Police Force at the Esa Oke Division, where he is currently being held for questioning regarding the homicide.

The Osun State Police Command, through its spokesperson Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed the incident on Saturday, noting that the knife used in the attack has been recovered as an exhibit. The body of the deceased has been deposited at a local mortuary for an autopsy.

This senseless tragedy has cast a somber shadow over the community’s cultural celebrations, leaving residents to mourn a life lost over a minor financial disagreement.
