Kenneth Okonkwo Slams Peter Obi, Questions His Leadership Temperament
In a stinging critique that has sent ripples through the political landscape, prominent lawyer and chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Kenneth Okonkwo, has dismissed the political necessity of Peter Obi within his party.
Okonkwo, a former spokesperson for the Obi-Datti Presidential Campaign, asserted that while the former Anambra Governor may have needed the ADC platform, the party does not require his involvement to remain relevant.
Speaking during a media appearance on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, Okonkwo did not mince words regarding Obi’s leadership style and temperament. He argued that Nigeria is currently navigating a period of severe multi-dimensional crises that require a leader with a “steely resolve” rather than one who seeks to avoid difficult political challenges.
“A man who says he is running away from challenges cannot be trusted with a country facing severe crises,” Okonkwo declared. He further characterized Obi’s temperament as being “incompatible” with the urgent and aggressive demands of modern Nigerian governance.
This marks a significant escalation in the rift between the veteran actor-turned-politician and the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate.
The ADC chieftain’s remarks come amid heightened speculation regarding opposition alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections. Okonkwo suggested that the ADC is building a robust structure independent of “individual-centric” movements, positioning the party as a formidable alternative that does not rely on the momentum of previous election cycles.
Political analysts view these comments as a definitive break from the “Obidient” movement that Okonkwo once championed. By questioning Obi’s ability to handle national pressure, Okonkwo appears to be signaling a new direction for the ADC, one that prioritizes organizational strength and “crisis-ready” leadership over the populist appeal that defined the 2023 electoral season.
