APC Primaries: 83 Aspirants Jostle for Governorship Tickets in 28 States
The All Progressives Congress (APC) is witnessing an intense internal scramble as 83 aspirants have officially entered the race for governorship tickets across 28 states.
This surge in interest comes ahead of the party’s primary elections, signaling a high-stakes battle for leadership within the ruling party as it seeks to consolidate its power nationwide.
The high number of contenders underscores the perceived strength of the APC platform and the intense competition among party stalwarts to succeed incumbent governors or challenge the opposition.
Party leadership noted that the diversity and volume of aspirants reflect the vibrant democratic spirit within the APC, though it also presents a significant logistical and reconciliatory challenge.
Key states with high-profile vacancies or vulnerable opposition seats have seen the most crowded fields, with some states featuring upwards of five to seven aspirants each.
The National Working Committee (NWC) has emphasized its commitment to a transparent and fair primary process to prevent post-election friction that could weaken the party’s chances in the general elections.
To manage the high volume of candidates, the party has established screening committees to vet the credentials, party loyalty, and eligibility of all 83 individuals. These committees are tasked with ensuring that all aspirants meet the constitutional requirements and adhere to the party’s internal code of conduct during their campaigns.
The cost of nomination and expression of interest forms has not deterred the aspirants, many of whom are seasoned politicians, former ministers, and technocrats.
This influx of resources and personnel is expected to drive high engagement levels at the grassroots, but observers warn that it could also lead to deep-seated factions if not handled with caution.
As the primaries approach, the APC is focused on maintaining internal stability and selecting winable candidates who can navigate the complexities of their respective states.
The outcome of these contests will be a major indicator of the party’s direction and its readiness for the upcoming 2027 general elections.
