UBA Confirms Arrest of 3 Over Alleged False Claims About Elumelu

United Bank for Africa (UBA) has confirmed the arrest of three individuals over the circulation of what it described as false and defamatory claims targeting its Group Chairman, Tony O. Elumelu.

In a statement, the bank said the viral reports alleging that Elumelu had separated from his wife were entirely fabricated and intended to mislead the public while harming his reputation. It added that the matter had been referred to law enforcement authorities, who have commenced a full investigation.

UBA identified those arrested as Kingsley Akunemeihe, Chigozie Success Ihebom, and John Surpruchi Nwanorue, noting that further arrests may follow as investigations continue into individuals involved in originating or spreading the claims.

The bank also issued a directive to individuals and platforms disseminating the content to immediately remove the material and retain all related records, including digital communications and metadata, for potential legal proceedings.

Reaffirming its position, UBA said it would pursue all available legal options to protect the integrity and reputation of its leadership and brand. The statement warned that failure to comply with the takedown directive could result in legal action, including claims for defamation, damages, and other remedies under applicable laws.

The statement was signed by Alero Ladipo, the bank’s Group Head of Brand, Marketing and Corporate Communications.
