Tragedy in Benue as Gunmen Kill Mourners Returning from Burial
Gunmen have struck a peaceful community in Benue State on a sad night, turning a time of mourning into more pain and loss.
In the Sati-Ikov area of Ushongo Local Government Area, suspected armed militia attacked people who were coming back from a burial ceremony. The attack happened late on Saturday night and continued into the early hours of Sunday morning.
Many residents were shocked as the gunmen opened fire without warning.
Four young men lost their lives in the violent incident. Three of them were mourners heading home after paying their last respects, while the fourth victim was also caught in the crossfire. In addition to the killings, the attackers kidnapped two people from the community. One was a well-known owner of a patent medicine shop, and the other ran a Point of Sale (POS) business. Several others suffered gunshot wounds and are now receiving treatment.
The gunmen did not stop at killing and kidnapping. They also stole valuable items, including motorcycles and other personal belongings from the residents.
Dr. Simon Gabo, who represents the Mata State Constituency in the Benue State House of Assembly, confirmed the details of the attack. He described it as very alarming and noted that the attackers likely came from a neighbouring area, crossing difficult terrain to reach the community.
This latest violence adds to a series of troubling incidents in the area over the past two weeks. Residents have reported previous cases of killings, injuries from gunshots, and robberies of property.
Local police have been informed and have started deploying officers to the scene to restore calm and investigate the matter. Many people in the community now live in fear as they try to understand why such attacks continue to happen.
The people of Benue are calling for stronger security measures to protect their lives and homes. Families affected by the attack are grieving their loved ones while hoping for the safe return of those who were taken away. This sad event highlights the need for peace and better protection in the region so that residents can live without constant worry.
