Iyabo Obasanjo Returns to PDP Days After Quitting APC

Former Senator representing Ogun Central, Iyabo Obasanjo, has returned to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) just days after resigning from the All Progressives Congress (APC), in a move that could reshape political alignments ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Ogun State.

Iyabo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, officially rejoined the PDP during a party event held in Abeokuta, where she was welcomed by party leaders and supporters. Her return comes barely two weeks after she announced her resignation from the APC, citing dissatisfaction with the party’s internal processes and alleged marginalisation.

Speaking at the event, Obasanjo expressed confidence in the PDP’s ability to reclaim power in Ogun State and declared her support for the party’s governorship candidate, Ladi Adebutu. She described Adebutu as the candidate best positioned to lead the state and urged party members to remain united ahead of the next election cycle.

According to her, the PDP remains the most viable platform for delivering good governance and addressing the challenges facing the people of Ogun State. She also pledged to work with party stakeholders to strengthen the opposition’s chances in future elections. exit from the APC followed controversy surrounding the party’s governorship succession plans in Ogun State.

In her resignation letter, she accused some party leaders of sidelining stakeholders and failing to uphold the principles of inclusiveness and consultation in key political decisions. The former lawmaker had reportedly sought greater involvement in discussions concerning the party’s future direction but became disillusioned with developments within the APC.

Political observers believe her departure reflects growing tensions within the ruling party as aspirants and stakeholders begin positioning themselves for the 2027 elections.

Her return is expected to boost the PDP’s profile in Ogun State, given her political experience and influence. Analysts say the move could strengthen the opposition party’s efforts to challenge the APC’s dominance in the state and attract more defectors in the coming months.

Iyabo Obasanjo previously served as Ogun State Commissioner for Health before representing Ogun Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly on the PDP platform.

Her latest political move marks a return to the party under which she first rose to national prominence.

With political activities gradually gaining momentum ahead of 2027, her return is likely to generate fresh debates and realignments within Ogun State’s political landscape.
