Police Warn Against Destruction of Campaign Materials in Ekiti
The Ekiti State Police Command has issued a stern warning to politicians and their supporters against engaging in unlawful activities as campaign activities for the upcoming June 20 governorship election intensify.
The command’s spokesperson, Sunday Abutu, expressed concern over reports that political party loyalists have been defacing and destroying the campaign posters and billboards of rival parties. The police characterized these actions as violations of both the Electoral Act and the constitutional right to freedom of expression.
Commissioner of Police Michael Falade has urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any individuals or groups attempting to create apprehension or unrest in the state. He emphasized that the police will deal severely with anyone found culpable, in accordance with the law.
The command advised political leaders to play by the rules and counsel their supporters against participating in destructive behavior. Furthermore, the police called on parents and guardians to monitor their wards, warning them against being used as instruments by “mischievous politicians” to jeopardize the goal of a peaceful, free, and credible election.
To facilitate reporting of suspicious activity, the command has provided an emergency line: 08062335577.
