Outrage as Nigerian Army Faces Scrutiny Over Killing of NYSC Member in Abuja

The Nigerian Army is currently facing intense public scrutiny and backlash following the tragic death of Abdulsamad Jamiu, a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

The incident took place in the early hours of Saturday in the Dei-Dei area of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, claiming the life of a young man who was reportedly just one month away from completing his national service.

In an initial official statement released on Sunday, the Army provided its version of events, asserting that troops from the Quick Response Group were conducting a routine night patrol when they responded to a distress call concerning an armed robbery. According to Lieutenant Odunola Olawuyi, the Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, the soldiers engaged in a “gun duel” with fleeing suspects, during which Jamiu was tragically caught in the crossfire.

This account has been vehemently challenged by the victim’s family and friends, who claim the incident was an act of extrajudicial killing rather than an accidental death. Viral accounts from the residence allege that at approximately 2:00 a.m., armed soldiers breached the perimeter of the home, bypassed family members, and proceeded directly to Jamiu’s room, where they allegedly shot through his locked door multiple times, inflicting fatal head and stomach wounds.

Beyond the killing itself, the family has leveled serious allegations of a cover-up against the military personnel involved. Reports circulating on social media suggest that the soldiers prevented Jamiu’s sister from seeking immediate medical assistance or calling for help.

Furthermore, they are accused of summoning local vigilantes to clean the crime scene and remove the blood before the full scope of the tragedy was acknowledged by the authorities.

The incident has triggered widespread outrage and skepticism across Nigeria, with many citizens taking to social media platforms to voice their disbelief regarding the Army’s “crossfire” explanation. Viral videos documenting the scene and the family’s testimony have fueled these public protests, with demonstrators gathering in front of the residence to demand justice and hold the military accountable for the corps member’s death.

Public discourse has been sharp, with many commentators highlighting the inconsistency of the Army’s narrative. Social media users and community observers have pointed out that the physical evidence specifically the location of the bullet holes contradicts the claim that Jamiu died in an external gunfight. This has led to mounting demands for a truly independent and transparent investigation, with many stressing that the loss of a young life in such circumstances should not be normalized or dismissed.

Responding to the escalating pressure, the Nigerian Army has announced that the Brigade has initiated a thorough investigation to ascertain the exact circumstances of the incident. While the Army remains under fire, they have pledged to uphold accountability, assuring the public that the findings of their internal probe will be made available in due course to address the concerns raised by the family and the wider public.
