Malian Intelligence Chief, Modibo Koné Dies After JNIM Attack
Mali is in mourning after General Modibo Koné, the country’s National Intelligence Chief, passed away from injuries he suffered in a deadly attack.
The incident happened on Saturday when fighters from the group known as JNIM launched a bold operation. Reports say the attack also targeted the residence of Mali’s leader, Assimi Goïta, in what appeared to be an attempt to strike at the top of the military government.
During the same attack, the Chief of Army Staff, Oumar Diarra, was also seriously wounded. The militants seemed to aim for a major blow against the country’s leadership. Although Goïta himself escaped unharmed, the deaths and injuries have sent shockwaves through Mali’s security forces and the wider Sahel region.
JNIM, a major jihadist group active in the area, has been fighting against government troops for years. This latest strike shows how bold the militants have become, managing to reach important targets near the capital. Security experts say the attack highlights the growing challenges faced by Mali in its long battle against terrorism.
The loss of General Modibo Koné is a big setback for Mali’s intelligence operations. As head of national intelligence, he played a key role in gathering information and fighting threats to the country. His death comes at a difficult time when the military-led government is trying to stabilise the nation after years of unrest.
Many people in Mali and beyond are now watching closely to see how the government will respond. The incident has raised fresh concerns about safety even at the highest levels. Leaders will likely step up efforts to strengthen security and prevent more attacks as the country continues its fight for peace and stability.
