Kano State House of Assembly Confirms Murtala Garo as Deputy Governor

The Kano State House of Assembly officially confirmed the appointment of Murtala Garo as the new Deputy Governor of Kano State on Monday, April 27, 2026. This approval followed the formal presentation and subsequent adoption of a report submitted by the Assembly’s ad hoc screening committee.

The confirmation process was conducted during a plenary session presided over by the Speaker of the House, Jibril Falgore. The session followed the submission of findings by a 12-member committee, which was chaired by the Deputy Speaker, Bello Butubutua.

Governor Abba Yusuf had initially forwarded the nomination of Garo to the lawmakers for screening and confirmation on April 22. This action was taken in accordance with Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria, which authorizes a state governor to appoint a replacement in the event of a vacancy in the office of the deputy governor.

During the presentation of the committee’s report, Deputy Speaker Butubutua confirmed that the nominee had undergone a thorough screening process. He stated that the committee found Garo fully qualified for the high-ranking position after carefully examining his academic credentials, professional experience, and personal background.

Murtala Garo, aged 48, is recognized as an experienced political administrator. He brings to the role over two decades of significant experience in the public service sector, which the Assembly deemed sufficient for his new responsibilities.

His appointment comes as a direct replacement following the resignation of the former deputy governor, Aminu Gwarzo, which occurred in March 2026. This transition marks a notable change in the state’s executive leadership structure.

With the Assembly’s official confirmation now complete, the legislative process required for Garo to assume his new office has been finalized, paving the way for him to serve as Governor Abba Yusuf’s deputy.
