IGP Disu Proposes 200% Gratuity for Retired Police Officers
Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu has proposed a 200 per cent gratuity and improved pension benefits for retired police officers as part of efforts to reform the force’s retirement system.
According to a statement by the Nigeria Police Force, the proposal is currently before a presidential committee comprising key financial and pension institutions, which is examining sustainable ways to address longstanding concerns over retirement benefits.
The proposed reforms include calculating pensions based on officers’ last salaries, settling outstanding pension liabilities and reviewing benefits for personnel who have already retired.
The initiative also seeks to address dissatisfaction with the Contributory Pension Scheme and improve the administration of retirement benefits to ensure timely payments.
Although the Federal Government has reportedly cleared outstanding pension payments and introduced increases for some beneficiaries, retired police officers continue to call for a more sustainable arrangement that guarantees financial security after years of service.
However, the proposed 200 per cent gratuity and other measures have not been approved as entitlements. Their implementation will depend on the committee’s recommendations, government approval, funding arrangements and the issuance of relevant guidelines.
