LASTMA Reports 69 Road Deaths in Lagos in Q1 2026
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority says 69 people died in road accidents across Lagos State in the first quarter of 2026, while 246 others sustained injuries.
The General Manager of the agency, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Sunday, noting that the figures were recorded between January and March.
He said the agency responded to over 600 accident scenes during the period and handled more than 900 traffic violations involving trucks and articulated vehicles.
Bakare-Oki added that LASTMA carried out about 4,900 physical enforcement operations and recorded 17,942 traffic offences through technology-driven systems, including the use of traffic monitoring devices.
He reiterated the agency’s zero-tolerance stance on traffic infractions, stating that impounded vehicles would be prosecuted at the state’s mobile court.
According to him, operational improvements have been introduced to enhance response time and traffic flow, including the repositioning of recovery vehicles and upgrades to traffic management equipment.
He also said the agency has prioritised staff development, with plans to train over 1,000 personnel in 2026 through both internal and external programmes aimed at improving service delivery.
The measures, he said, are part of ongoing efforts to strengthen traffic management and reduce road incidents across the state.
