Alaafin of Oyo Oba Akeem Owoade Visits Kwara, Advocates for Enhanced Cross-Border Security, Intelligence Sharing

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade has paid a courtesy visit to Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq in Ilorin.

The primary purpose of the visit was to advocate for stronger cooperation between security agencies and to address the pressing issue of terrorism and regional insecurity affecting the border corridors.

During the meeting, the monarch emphasized that effective security management cannot rely on government intervention alone.

He argued that there must be a seamless synergy between local community knowledge and the capacity of state security apparatuses to identify and neutralize threats before they escalate into full-scale violence.

Oba Owoade specifically highlighted the vulnerability of rural and border communities, stating that they often suffer disproportionately from security breaches. He demanded that the safety of these regions command the same level of urgency and sustained security presence as that currently afforded to major urban centers in the country.

Beyond physical security, the Alaafin called for deep investment in intelligence gathering and preventive strategies. He asserted that security threats are rarely isolated incidents; rather, they are often organized, financed, and facilitated by established networks that must be systematically disrupted, identified, and prosecuted according to the law.

Communication was identified as a critical pillar for maintaining stability. The monarch stressed that constant dialogue between the government and traditional rulers is vital to provide timely information to the public, which helps in calming fears, countering misinformation, and maintaining community trust during periods of heightened tension.

The visit also served as a significant gesture of solidarity. The Alaafin reaffirmed his close ties with Yoruba communities in Kwara State, describing them as an integral part of a shared cultural and human fabric that is bound by history, kinship, and longstanding civilizational relationships.

In his response, Governor AbdulRazaq warmly commended the monarch, labeling him a “detribalized and visionary” leader. The governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to prioritizing security and vowed to continue integrating traditional institutions into the state’s governance and conflict resolution processes.

To conclude the visit, Oba Owoade extended his tour to the Shao and Jebba communities, where he interacted with local residents. Accompanied by members of the Oyo Traditional Council and other fellow traditional rulers, the Alaafin’s outreach underscored the vital importance of traditional leadership in fostering cross-border cooperation and unity.
