Tinubu Reaffirms Commitment to Boosting Nigeria-UK Aviation, Economic Partnership

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening economic relations with the United Kingdom, specifically prioritizing the aviation sector and other mutually beneficial areas.

This pledge was made during a meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja with a delegation from British Airways, which included the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Richard Montgomery, and the airline’s Commercial Officer, Mr. Colm Lacy.

During the engagement, President Tinubu underscored the long-standing bilateral history between the two nations, describing the 90-year relationship as a significant milestone worth celebrating. He fondly recalled his recent visit to the United Kingdom and his reception by His Majesty King Charles III, stating that he cherishes the memory of that experience.

The President emphasized that the current administration is dedicated to maintaining the cooperative spirit established by the forebears of both nations. He noted that such engagements serve to confirm and solidify the bilateral relations that have been cultivated over many decades, ensuring they remain robust for the future.

President Tinubu also highlighted that Nigeria is actively undergoing wide-ranging reforms within its aviation industry and other economic sectors. These transformations are designed to align Nigerian standards with global best practices while fostering stronger international partnerships and person-to-person connections.

Addressing the role of British Airways, the President lauded its 90 years of operation in Nigeria. He expressed his government’s desire to continue enhancing this relationship to create a more rewarding and sustainable partnership for both countries, acknowledging the airline’s contribution to socio-economic ties.

In a proactive move to address industry concerns, President Tinubu disclosed that his administration is resolving longstanding financial issues that have previously hindered airline operations. He noted that since he assumed office, the Central Bank of Nigeria has been working to clear outstanding liabilities and remove hiccups, thereby creating a more favorable environment for foreign airlines.

For their part, the British delegation expressed gratitude for the government’s efforts. Mr. Colm Lacy of British Airways described Nigeria as a key and valued market, noting that the airline’s services are vital for supporting entrepreneurs, students, and tourists.

He also commended the Nigerian aviation authorities and the Central Bank for the improvements made to the operating environment.

The meeting concluded with optimism regarding the future of Nigeria-UK economic cooperation. British High Commissioner Dr. Richard Montgomery expressed satisfaction with the progress of recent bilateral engagements, highlighting that these discussions have already led to significant investment deals, including the planned rehabilitation of Lagos Ports.
