Nigerian Arrested in Thailand Over Alleged Cocaine Trafficking
A 46-year-old Nigerian national, Nwaiwu Ifeanyi Placid, was recently arrested in Thailand for his alleged involvement in a cocaine trafficking network.
The arrest took place on a Saturday night in the Silom district of Bangkok, following a targeted operation by the Metropolitan Police Bureau.
According to police reports, authorities tracked the suspect to Silom Soi 1, where they successfully apprehended him. During the arrest, officers discovered and seized approximately 27 grammes of cocaine in his possession.
Alongside Placid, police also arrested three other individuals linked to drug possession charges. This group included a Swiss national named Thomas Giubibini, as well as two Thai suspects identified as 35-year-old Thanayot Asawamethi and 34-year-old Nattawat Wangkitjinda.
The law enforcement operation resulted in significant seizures beyond the drugs themselves.
Authorities confiscated about 30 grammes of cocaine in total, along with a car, 1.5 million baht in cash, foreign currency worth 15,000 baht, and jewelry valued at approximately 400,000 baht.
These arrests are part of a broader crackdown by Thai authorities on drug syndicates operating in the city. Police officials noted that this investigation is connected to previous successful raids, including one last October that dismantled a Nana-based network involving nine Nigerian suspects.
Investigators also identified another Nigerian suspect, a 47-year-old known as “Patrick,” as a pivotal figure in the trafficking ring. Police allege that he has lived in Thailand for at least 17 years and successfully operated a “middleman-free” drug network by infiltrating communication channels and chat groups.
Following the operation, Deputy commissioner Pol Maj Gen Theeradet Thamsuthee stated that the primary suspect resisted arrest but was eventually restrained.
All suspects remain in custody as the police continue their ongoing investigation into the network’s activities.
