Young Doctor Dies Months After Brutal Attack by Patient’s Relative in Delta State
A young house officer at Central Hospital in Warri, Delta State, has died after months of struggling with injuries from a violent attack.
Dr. Ogbomade Samson Romani, a graduate of Niger Delta University, passed away in the early hours of the day after collapsing and being rushed to the Intensive Care Unit. His death has left colleagues and the medical community in deep shock and sadness.
The tragedy started in February when Dr. Samson was brutally beaten for nearly 20 minutes while on duty. The attack, allegedly arranged by a patient’s relative, began at the hospital gate.
Security personnel were said to have responded slowly during the first five minutes. The young doctor suffered severe injuries to his face and abdomen, which led to ongoing health complications.
Despite the seriousness of the assault, the attackers were never arrested. Dr. Samson continued working while battling the effects of his injuries. Earlier this week, he felt unwell during a meeting, excused himself, and collapsed on his way to the hostel. He was immediately admitted to the ICU but could not survive.
Fellow doctors described Dr. Samson as a hardworking, respectful, and dedicated professional who was deeply committed to his duties. His passing is the second loss of a medical doctor linked to the Niger Delta University community within the same week. This has raised fresh worries about the safety of healthcare workers in public hospitals.
Medical colleagues and concerned stakeholders are now calling on the Delta State Government to investigate the February attack, arrest those responsible, and put stronger security measures in place. They want better protection for doctors and nurses who risk their lives every day to save others.
Dr. Samson’s death has sparked renewed demands for justice and improved safety in hospitals across the state.
