Niger State to Launch Carbon Market Office to Drive Green Investment, Economic Growth

By 𝔸bdulrazak Tomiwa

The Niger State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to establishing the Niger State Carbon Market Office (NSCMO).

This move is designed to position the state as a leading participant in Nigeria’s growing carbon market ecosystem.

The initiative aims to link environmental sustainability with economic growth and revenue diversification. By joining the carbon market, the state hopes to attract significant green investments and unlock new financial opportunities for its citizens.

Governor Umar Bago’s administration views the project as a strategic economic intervention rather than just an environmental program. It is expected to create jobs, strengthen the state’s revenue base, and provide better access to global climate finance.

To ensure success, the government is adopting a phased and disciplined implementation model. This approach is intended to maintain high levels of accountability and ensure the long-term sustainability of the state’s environmental goals.

A lean institutional framework has been designed to reduce bureaucracy and accelerate the execution of projects. Strategic leadership will be provided by the Governor, while the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) coordinates various agencies.

The state plans to leverage international partnerships and technical expertise to meet rigorous global standards. This includes focusing on carbon accounting and project certification to build high levels of investor confidence.

Legal and regulatory oversight for the initiative will be managed by the Ministry of Justice. Stakeholders are encouraged to support the project, which seeks to make Niger State a model for subnational carbon development in Nigeria.
