7 Injured in Abuja Two-Storey Building Collapse
Seven persons sustained injuries on Friday after a two-storey building under construction collapsed in Jikwoyi, a suburb within the Abuja Municipal Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory.
The incident occurred around 11 a.m. while construction workers were on site, triggering panic in the area as residents and passersby rushed to assist before emergency responders arrived.
The FCT Emergency Management Department confirmed that rescue operations were ongoing, adding that one individual initially trapped beneath the debris had been successfully rescued alive.
Emergency officials said responders remained at the scene, continuing search and rescue efforts to locate any other victims possibly trapped under the rubble.
According to the agency, the structure, which was still under construction, suddenly gave way, prompting immediate intervention from relevant authorities.
Details from the FEMD Search and Rescue Team indicated that 17 workers were on the upper floor at the time of the collapse. Five of them sustained injuries, while a man at the ground level was trapped before being rescued.
The injured victims have been taken to the Sisters of Nativity Hospital, where they are reportedly responding to treatment.
Several agencies, including the National Emergency Management Agency, the Department of Development Control, the Engineering Department of the FCDA, the Federal Fire Service, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and the Nigeria Police Force, were present at the scene coordinating rescue efforts.
Authorities assured that efforts were being intensified to account for all affected persons, while emphasising the importance of adhering strictly to building safety regulations.
The incident has renewed concerns about weak enforcement of construction standards, especially amid rapid urban growth. Data indicates that Nigeria recorded 271 building collapses over the past decade, underscoring the scale of the challenge.
