Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior has officially dropped midfielder and vice-captain Enzo Fernández for the club’s next two fixtures. The disciplinary action follows controversial remarks made by the Argentine international regarding his future and a potential move to Real Madrid

The suspension means Fernández will be unavailable for Saturday’s FA Cup quarter-final against Port Vale to and the high-stakes Premier League clash against Manchester City on April 12.

The controversy ignited after a recent interview where Fernández expressed uncertainty about his long-term future at Stamford Bridge.

When asked about staying past the current season, the 25-year-old reportedly stated, “I don’t know… we’ll see after the World Cup.”

Compounding the issue were comments made during the international break, where he spoke of his fondness for the city of Madrid, comparing its atmosphere to his hometown of Buenos Aires.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday, April 3, 2026, Rosenior confirmed the club’s stance:

“We’ve made a decision he won’t be available for tomorrow’s game and he won’t be available for Manchester City. A line was crossed in terms of our culture and what we want to build. It’s disappointing to speak in that way.”

The decision is reportedly a “joint one,” supported by Chelsea’s ownership and leadership. While Rosenior emphasized that he maintains personal respect for Fernández, the sanction is seen as a necessary move to protect squad discipline following Chelsea’s recent Champions League exit at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain.

The player’s representative, Javier Pastore, has already labeled the suspension “completely unfair.” Pastore argued that Fernández was simply answering questions about lifestyle preferences and never explicitly requested a transfer.

“Enzo didn’t understand the situation,” Pastore told The Athletic. “He only mentions Madrid, the city, because he was asked which European city he’d like to live in one day. At no point does he say he wants to leave Chelsea.”
