Two Nigerians Detained in Pune Over Alleged Murder of Compatriot
Indian authorities have launched investigations into two separate incidents involving Nigerian nationals, including a fatal assault in Pune that has resulted in the detention of two suspects.
Police in Kalepadal, an area in the eastern part of Pune, confirmed on Monday that two Nigerian men were apprehended for allegedly beating their 40-year-old friend to death.
The victim, who was also a Nigerian citizen, was reported to have been residing in the Phursungi area of the city.
Details of the incident were contained in a report published by The Times of India on Friday. It stated, “The victim and his friends gathered at the house of a Nigerian woman for a party on Sunday, and an altercation broke out among them over a woman.
“In the early hours of Monday, as the victim was leaving the flat, his friends allegedly followed him and bludgeoned him to death in the building’s parking lot,” the report said.
Investigators believe the dispute that led to the killing was personal in nature. Police officials said preliminary inquiries indicate that tensions escalated during the gathering, eventually resulting in the fatal confrontation.
The two detained suspects are currently undergoing interrogation as detectives work to piece together the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The case has sent shockwaves through sections of the Nigerian community in Pune, with many expressing concern over the violent turn of events. Authorities have assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway and that those responsible will be prosecuted in accordance with Indian law.
Meanwhile, in an unrelated development, Indian law enforcement agencies recently arrested two other Nigerian nationals in Hyderabad for alleged involvement in drug trafficking and visa violations.
The suspects, identified as 42-year-old Chidi Ezeh and 38-year-old Obasi Victor, were taken into custody by detectives of the Hyderabad-Narcotics Enforcement Wing shortly after arriving from Delhi on Friday.
According to officials, investigations revealed that both men had overstayed their visas. The arrest followed intelligence-led operations aimed at dismantling suspected narcotics distribution networks operating in the region.
“Victor is expected to be deported to Nigeria, while Chidi was taken into custody,” the report added.
Indian security agencies have in recent years intensified efforts to curb drug-related crimes and enforce immigration regulations involving foreign nationals.
Authorities stated that investigations into both matters are continuing, with further actions expected as more information becomes available.
