Fix Dilapidated Bassa, Resident Appeals to Nasarawa Govt

Residents of Bassa community in Kokona Local Government Area have issued a desperate “Save Our Souls” appeal to Governor Abdullahi Sule, calling for the immediate reconstruction of the dilapidated Garaku–Bassa road.

In a video report circulating on social media, community members highlighted the near-total collapse of the route, which serves as a vital artery connecting several agrarian villages to the local government headquarters.

The residents expressed deep frustration, noting that the failed sections of the road have led to “economic strangulation,” as farmers are increasingly unable to transport their agricultural produce to markets in Lafia and the Federal Capital Territory.

Beyond the economic toll, the community emphasized the dire humanitarian and security consequences of the road’s neglect. They reported that the deep craters and mud-filled trenches force vehicles to a crawl, making travelers easy targets for bandits and kidnappers.

Furthermore, accessing emergency healthcare has become a significant challenge, with residents recounting stories of pregnant women and the critically ill suffering complications during the agonizingly slow journey to the hospital in Garaku.

The community feels increasingly isolated and “forgotten,” despite their continued support for the state government.

In response to these mounting concerns, the Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Danladi Jatau—who represents the constituency has assured the public that the state government is aware of their plight.

He noted that while several major infrastructure projects are currently underway across the state as part of the 2026 development framework, the Garaku–Bassa road remains a priority for future intervention.

However, for the people of Bassa, these promises offer little relief as they continue to manually patch the road with stones, waiting for a concrete timeline and the arrival of construction machinery to provide a permanent solution to their daily struggle.
