Adelabu Petitions DSS Over Primate Ayodele’s Alleged ₦150 Million Spiritual Extortion

The Minister of Power, Bayo Adelabu, has formally petitioned the Department of State Services (DSS), accusing Primate Elijah Ayodele, leader of the INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, of attempting to extort ₦150 million under the guise of “spiritual intercession” linked to Adelabu’s political ambition to become Governor of Oyo State in 2027.

In a petition dated October 13, 2025, submitted through his Special Adviser on Strategic Communications, Adelabu alleged that Primate Ayodele repeatedly requested large sums of money and expensive spiritual items, including 1,000 trumpets and other ritual materials, purportedly required to secure divine favor for his governorship aspiration.

Adelabu said he rejected these demands, emphasizing that his political ambition is motivated by public service, not spiritual manipulation.

Following his refusal, Adelabu claimed that Ayodele began issuing malicious prophecies, suggesting he would fail in his quest to secure the governorship ticket.

The minister argued that such actions were not only damaging to his personal reputation but also potentially disruptive to political stability in Oyo State.

Consequently, he asked the DSS to investigate the cleric, compel a retraction of the allegedly defamatory prophecies, and secure a public apology.

Primate Ayodele has denied the extortion allegations, stating that he never directly asked Adelabu for money. According to the cleric, the minister merely inquired about the cost of certain spiritual items, and Ayodele provided estimates while suggesting verification through market sources. He also maintained that any prophecies he made were part of his spiritual counsel, not retaliatory measures for being rebuffed.

The dispute marks a rare public confrontation between a senior government official and a prominent religious leader. It highlights the delicate intersection of religion, politics, and public perception in Nigeria, particularly as the 2027 governorship election in Oyo State approaches.

As of now, the DSS has not publicly responded to Adelabu’s petition. The case continues to draw attention for its potential legal and political ramifications, including questions about the influence of religious figures on political aspirations and electoral processes.

This unfolding dispute is expected to remain in the public eye, particularly as political tensions rise ahead of the 2027 Oyo State governorship race.
