Low Turnout at Rally Mars 30th Anniversary of Saro-Wiwa and Eight Others

A rally organized by a faction of the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) to mark the 30th anniversary of the execution of the group’s founder, Ken Saro-Wiwa, and eight others, recorded a notably low turnout on Monday.

The commemoration, held at the Peace and Freedom Park within the MOSOP secretariat, went ahead as planned despite the limited attendance. Reports suggest that other Ogoni groups were holding separate commemorations, contributing to the sparse turnout.

Professor Olu-Andah Wai-Ogosu, acclaimed president of the faction, expressed concern over the dwindling participation of the Ogoni people in the organization’s events.

He described the low turnout as a sign of growing divisions within MOSOP, recalling that the organization, founded by the late Saro-Wiwa, was once a united and formidable force in the struggle for the rights and development of the Ogoni people.

“The unity that Ken Saro-Wiwa inspired seems to be fading. The low engagement is a worrying reflection of the internal challenges facing MOSOP today,” Professor Wai-Ogosu said.

Ken Saro-Wiwa, along with eight other Ogoni leaders, was executed by the military regime of General Sani Abacha in 1995, sparking international condemnation and turning him into a global symbol of environmental and human rights activism.

The rally included speeches, cultural performances, and prayers in remembrance of the late activists, with organizers urging the Ogoni community to renew their commitment to Saro-Wiwa’s vision for social justice and environmental protection.

MOSOP leaders emphasized that the commemoration is not just about remembering past sacrifices but also about reinvigorating the ongoing struggle for environmental justice, economic development, and political representation for the Ogoni people.

Despite the low turnout, the event served as a reminder of the enduring legacy of Ken Saro-Wiwa and the continued relevance of his fight for justice.
