Atiku Condemns Police Treatment of Sowore, Calls for Activist’s Release
Former presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar has strongly criticized the arrest and reported brutal treatment of activist Omoyele Sowore by the police.
In a statement, Atiku described the incident as a “shameful abuse of power” and accused the police of pursuing a personal vendetta against Sowore.
According to Atiku, Sowore’s only offense was speaking out against injustice and misrule. He emphasized that the police action was not about maintaining law and order but rather about silencing a critic.
Atiku cited the Nigeria Police Regulation 367, which prohibits police officers from instituting legal proceedings in their personal interests or in connection with matters arising from their public duties.
Atiku’s statement coincided with allegations from Sowore’s lawyer, Tope Temokun, that his client was subjected to inhumane treatment while in custody. Temokun claimed that Sowore was moved from police custody to an undisclosed location under circumstances that resulted in physical injury.
Atiku’s condemnation of the police’s actions highlights the growing concerns about the treatment of activists and critics in Nigeria.
He has demanded Sowore’s immediate and unconditional release, stating that this must stop. The incident has sparked outrage and raised questions about the role of the police in maintaining law and order while respecting citizens’ rights.
