Former Obi Supporter Explains Defection After Viral Tinubu Cap Incident
James Kitiya, a former supporter of Peter Obi, has explained his decision to withdraw support for the politician following a viral moment at a public event where he was seen wearing attire associated with Bola Tinubu.
Kitiya drew attention during the Vanguard Personality of the Year Awards after appearing among a group of youths who welcomed Obi while wearing a cap bearing Tinubu’s insignia, prompting mixed reactions on social media.
Speaking after the incident, Kitiya said he had previously worked for Obi’s 2023 presidential campaign in Lagos and shared evidence of his past involvement.
He disclosed that Obi recognised him at the event, leading to a private discussion later at the Eko Hotel, where he explained his reasons for leaving the former governor’s camp.
According to Kitiya, his decision was influenced by concerns about internal dynamics within Obi’s support base, particularly in Lagos, where he alleged that some loyalists had been compromised.
He said he advised Obi to strengthen his political structure in the state and outlined conditions under which he might reconsider his support.
Kitiya added that he eventually aligned with the All Progressives Congress earlier in 2026, citing uncertainty over Obi’s political direction as a key factor in his decision.
The incident has continued to generate discussion online, highlighting ongoing political realignments ahead of future elections.
