YABATECH, Partners Seek Creative Revolution Through Indigenous Storytelling
Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) has partnered with industry stakeholders to champion a creative revolution in Nigeria’s cultural and animation space, with a strong focus on indigenous storytelling.
The push was highlighted during a stop-motion animation symposium and workshop held at the institution, where experts, creatives, and academics gathered to explore ways of strengthening Nigeria’s creative industry and amplifying African narratives on the global stage.
Organised in collaboration with Radioxity Stop Motion Academy, the event underscored the urgency for Africans to tell their own stories rather than rely on foreign interpretations that may misrepresent the continent’s heritage and identity.
Speaking at the event, the Chief Executive Officer of Radioxity Media, Esther Kemi Gbadamosi, stressed the need for a coordinated cultural movement driven by local creatives. She noted that although African stories are gaining global visibility, many are still being told by non-Africans, raising concerns about authenticity and accuracy.
described storytelling as a powerful tool that shapes perception and identity, warning that failure to take ownership of local narratives could lead to continued distortion of African history.
She also highlighted stop-motion animation as an underutilised medium capable of projecting Nigeria’s rich culture to global audiences, particularly among younger generations.
Participants at the symposium called for stronger collaboration between academic institutions and industry players to build capacity, enhance technical skills, and create sustainable opportunities within the creative economy.
They emphasised the importance of investing in training, innovation, and digital tools to enable Nigerian creatives compete globally.
The initiative aligns with ongoing efforts by YABATECH to promote entrepreneurship, digital skills development, and innovation among students, while positioning the institution as a hub for creative excellence.
