Chelsea Part Ways with Liam Rosenior After Dismal Premier League Run

Chelsea Football Club has officially sacked head coach, Liam Rosenior, ending his short-lived tenure at Stamford Bridge after just four months.

The decision, announced on Wednesday evening, April 22, 2026, follows a catastrophic run of form that has seen the Blues slip to seventh in the Premier League table and all but ended their hopes of Champions League qualification.

The final straw for the Chelsea hierarchy was Tuesday’s abject 3-0 defeat away to Brighton, which marked the team’s fifth consecutive Premier League loss without scoring a single goal. This goal drought represents Chelsea’s worst top-flight run in 114 years. Rosenior, who was hired from French side Strasbourg in January to replace Enzo Maresca, managed only 11 wins in his 23 games in charge across all competitions.

In an official club statement, Chelsea expressed gratitude for Rosenior’s professionalism but emphasized that a change was necessary. “Liam has always conducted himself with the highest integrity and professionalism,” the statement read. “However, recent results and performances have fallen below the necessary standards with still so much more to play for this season.” Reports suggest that tensions between the manager and senior players spiked following Rosenior’s post-match comments on Tuesday, where he described the team’s performance as “indefensible.”

The timing of the dismissal is particularly sensitive, as Chelsea is set to face Leeds United in a high-stakes FA Cup semi-final at Wembley this Sunday. To manage the immediate transition, the club has appointed assistant coach Calum McFarlane as interim head coach until the end of the season. McFarlane will be tasked with stabilizing the squad and attempting to secure European football for next year.

As the search for a permanent successor begins, high-profile names like Julian Nagelsmann are already being linked with the vacancy. For Chelsea’s ownership, the pressure is mounting to find stability after a volatile period that has seen multiple managerial changes in a relatively short window. For now, the focus shifts to Wembley, where the Blues hope to salvage their season with a trophy.
