Tinubu Celebrates Orji Kalu at 66, Praises Political, Economic Contributions
Bola Tinubu on Tuesday congratulated Orji Uzor Kalu on his 66th birthday, commending his contributions to governance, business and national development.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the president described Kalu as a long-time ally whose resilience, vision, and industry have left a lasting impact on Abia State and the country at large.
Tinubu highlighted Kalu’s role as a businessman and chairman of SLOK Holding, noting his contributions to economic growth through investments, including ownership of media platforms.
He also acknowledged Kalu’s tenure as governor of Abia State between 1999 and 2007, as well as his current role as senator representing Abia North and chairman of the Senate Committee on the South-East Development Commission.
The president wished him continued strength, wisdom, and long life in service to the nation.
Kalu, born on April 21, 1960, in Igbere, Bende Local Government Area, has remained active in Nigeria’s political landscape. He was elected senator for Abia North in 2019 under the platform of the All Progressives Congress, defeating incumbent Mao Ohuabunwa.
During the 9th Senate, he served as Senate Majority Whip and currently heads the Senate Committee on the South-East Development Commission in the 10th Senate.
His political career has also included legal challenges. In December 2019, a Federal High Court in Lagos convicted him on fraud charges involving N7.65 billion and sentenced him to 12 years in prison. However, the Supreme Court of Nigeria overturned the conviction in May 2020 on procedural grounds, nullifying the trial and restoring his eligibility to participate in politics.
Kalu remains a prominent figure in both business and public service, with interests spanning media and other sectors.
