Tacha Sparks Debate Over ‘Discrimination’ Comment on Nigerians
Reality TV star and influencer, Natasha Akide, popularly known as Tacha, has stirred debate online after stating that Nigerians often exhibit discrimination comparable to racism.
Her remarks, posted Tuesday on X, came in response to backlash against Tunde Onakoya over a recent social media post.
“When I see Nigerians talk about racism, I just laugh. Because we’re some of the most discriminatory and segregating people to ever exist,” she wrote, adding that her personal experiences suggest local discrimination can be just as severe.
The controversy followed a video shared by Onakoya around April 19–20, showing him playing chess in traditional attire outside the Louvre Museum. He described the moment as a milestone, calling himself the first Nigerian to play chess at the iconic location.
While many users praised the cultural symbolism, critics questioned the claim, noting that the activity took place in a public space outside the museum and lacked official recognition as a historic “first.”
Weighing in, Tacha commended Onakoya’s response to the criticism, highlighting his resilience despite previous online attacks that once drove him off the platform.
She also criticised what she described as a pattern of online hostility, arguing that some social media users react negatively to others’ success and impact.
Her comments have since generated widespread reactions, with users divided over her characterisation of Nigerians’ behaviour and the broader conversation about discrimination and online culture.
