US Lawmaker Alleges Bribery Attempt by Nigeria’s Defence Minister

A member of the Florida House of Representatives, Kimberly Daniels, has alleged that Nigeria’s Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, attempted to bribe a United States official to influence the narrative of a security report on Nigeria.

Daniels made the claim in a video posted on her official Facebook account on Monday, asserting that the alleged move was aimed at countering findings contained in a report by the United World Congress of Diplomats.

According to her, the report addressed allegations of violence against Christians in Nigeria and implicated Matawalle, a claim the minister has yet to publicly respond to.

The lawmaker, who also serves as chairperson of the organisation, said no amount of pressure would deter her from speaking on the issue, particularly regarding killings reported in parts of Nigeria.

She had previously called on Bola Ahmed Tinubu to remove the minister over alleged complicity in insecurity affecting states such as Plateau, Benue, and Kaduna.

As of the time of filing this report, Matawalle has not issued an official reaction to the allegation.

The claims have since drawn attention online, adding to ongoing discussions around security challenges and accountability in Nigeria.
