Nigerian Found Dead in UK Apartment
A Nigerian father of three, identified simply as Herbert, has been found dead in his apartment in Thornaby, United Kingdom. His passing, which occurred just last week, has left the Nigerian community in the UK in shock and mourning.
The deceased was described as a devoted husband and father. He reportedly passed away suddenly in his sleep, a tragedy that occurred shortly after he had been dealing with the immense emotional and financial strain of his own father’s recent death in Nigeria.
According to reports, Herbert had exhausted his resources to ensure his father received a dignified burial in Nigeria, though he was unable to travel home for the funeral himself. Tragically, he passed away on the exact day his father was laid to rest.
The situation was further compounded by the traumatic manner of his discovery. Because his wife was away from the home at the time, it was his young children—the youngest of whom is only eight years old—who discovered his lifeless body.
Herbert’s death has left his widow to care for their three children alone while facing the daunting financial burden of funeral arrangements and the costs associated with repatriating his remains to Nigeria.
In response to the family’s plight, a fundraising campaign has been launched to assist with these expenses. As of the latest update, the campaign had raised £2,633 toward a target of £7,000, with community leaders like Benjamin Kuti appealing for public support.
This incident follows closely on the heels of another tragedy involving the Nigerian diaspora in the UK. Just one week prior, on April 5, 2026, a 40-year-old Nigerian mother of three, Omotayo Abioye, also passed away following a battle with breast cancer.
