Bauchi PDP Faction Ends Talks with APC Over Power-Sharing Dispute

Negotiations between Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the All Progressives Congress (APC) have collapsed following disagreements over key terms, including a proposed power-sharing arrangement.

The chairman of the Tanimu Turaki-backed PDP faction in the state, Samaila Adamu Burga, announced the breakdown of talks while addressing journalists in Bauchi on Saturday.

Burga said the APC was unwilling to accommodate the PDP structure and the existing state government framework, a major sticking point in the negotiations.

According to him, discussions were initiated by the APC through its National Chairman, Prof. Yiltwada Netanwe, with the involvement of Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, who visited Mohammed in Bauchi in a bid to persuade him to defect to the ruling party.

He, however, said the talks failed after the APC rejected a proposed 60/40 sharing formula for control of the party structure in Bauchi State, along with other conditions presented by the PDP faction.

“This is how it has been done in other places where governors defected to APC. They rejected this formula and we have closed that discussion,” Burga said, insisting that a sitting government could not cede control of its political structure from ward to state level.

He added that the press conference was convened at the instance of the governor, who he said had been directly involved in leading the discussions.

Burga further explained that after consultations with stakeholders, it became evident that the conditions for the proposed political realignment were not acceptable to the APC leadership, leading to the formal discontinuation of the talks.

He disclosed that the PDP faction in Bauchi is now exploring alternative political options, including potential alliances with other parties ahead of future elections.

“While we appreciate the outreach and engagement by the APC, we wish to state unequivocally that the process has now been brought to a close,” he said.

Burga noted that the party remains open to discussions with other political platforms, excluding the APC, as it seeks a suitable path forward that aligns with the interests of its members and the people of Bauchi State.

The development underscores ongoing political manoeuvring in the state as parties and stakeholders position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
