FG Sets 12-Month Completion Goal for Ijebu-Ode Inland Dry Port

By 𝔸bdulrazak Tomiwa

The Federal Government has established a 12-month timeline to complete the consultancy and technical phases for the proposed Ijebu-Ode Inland Dry Port.

This move is part of a strategic effort to decongest existing seaports and improve trade logistics across Nigeria.

During a stakeholders’ meeting in Abeokuta, the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy reviewed reports to guide the project’s execution. The government aims to ensure the port becomes a vital link in the nation’s maritime and supply chain infrastructure.

Minister Adegboyega Oyetola emphasized that the maritime sector is a primary driver for Nigeria’s economic growth and international competitiveness. He noted that the project requires data-driven reforms to unlock its full potential for the country.

The recent validation exercise was designed to harmonize technical recommendations with the practical experiences of industry operators. This collaborative approach ensures that the project framework is realistic, implementable, and compliant with current regulatory policies.

The Minister also highlighted that this consultative process helps identify implementation risks early while fostering transparency. By involving all key institutions, the government aims to build a sense of shared ownership over the port’s success.

The Ogun State Government has already supported the initiative by handing over the necessary land for the project’s construction. Governor Dapo Abiodun’s administration views the dry port as a way to transform the state into a premier industrial hub.

Ultimately, the Ijebu-Ode Inland Dry Port is expected to facilitate smoother trade flows and support the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). It will significantly reduce pressure on coastal ports while attracting new investments to the region.
