NARD Condemns Assault on Doctors in Delta Hospital

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors has condemned the assault on two of its members at a Delta State hospital, describing the incident as part of a growing trend of violence against healthcare workers.

The attack occurred on April 11 at the Special Care Baby Unit of Central Hospital in Warri, following the death of a newborn, the association said in a statement issued on Monday.

According to NARD, the affected doctors, a Senior Registrar and a House Officer, were attacked by a bereaved father after informing him of the child’s death.

The association described the reaction as unjustifiable, noting that the doctors were carrying out their professional duties at the time of the incident.

It added that the suspect has been arrested and is currently in police custody.

NARD called for the immediate prosecution of the assailant, stressing that such action would serve as a deterrent against further attacks on healthcare personnel.

The association also urged authorities to strengthen security measures across health facilities nationwide, citing increasing risks faced by medical workers.

In addition, it demanded compensation, protection and psychosocial support for the affected doctors.

NARD expressed solidarity with its members and backed a 48-hour warning strike initiated by doctors at the hospital, describing the action as a legitimate response to concerns over safety and workplace conditions.

The association further warned against any attempt by hospital management or government authorities to intimidate or victimise its members over the incident.
