Peter Magyar’s Tisza Party Ousts Viktor Orban in Hungary Election

By 𝔸bdulrazak Tomiwa

Early election results indicate that Peter Magyar’s opposition Tisza party has taken a commanding lead over Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s long-ruling Fidesz party.

With a significant portion of the votes counted, Tisza holds approximately 52 percent of the support compared to 38 percent for Fidesz.

This election saw a historic, record-breaking voter turnout of over 77 percent, the highest in Hungary’s post-communist history. Long lines were reported at polling stations across the country as citizens turned out in massive numbers to decide the nation’s future.

Peter Magyar, a former Fidesz insider turned rival, expressed “cautious confidence” as early figures showed his party leading in 95 of the 106 constituencies. He has already called for a “Hungarian carnival” to celebrate what appears to be a transformative victory.

In a stunning turn of events, Prime Minister Viktor Orban has reportedly conceded defeat, calling Magyar to congratulate him on the win. This marks the first major electoral loss for Orban since he returned to power in 2010.

The Tisza party is currently projected to secure over 130 mandates in the 199-seat parliament, surpassing the 100 seats needed for a majority. This shift ends sixteen years of uninterrupted dominance by the nationalist Fidesz party.

International observers are closely watching the results, as a Tisza victory is expected to reshape Hungary’s relationship with the European Union. Magyar has pledged to normalize ties with Brussels and unfreeze billions in withheld EU funding.

The atmosphere in Budapest remains electric as supporters of the opposition gather to celebrate the projected results. While final official figures are still being processed, the early data suggests a definitive end to the Orban era.
