Fayemi Recalls Being Labelled ‘Tokunbo’ During 2010 Ekiti Governorship Race

Former Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi has recalled how his political opponents tried to portray him as an outsider during his campaign for the state’s governorship in 2010.

He shared the experience in a book titled How To Win Elections in Nigeria.

Fayemi said opponents labelled him a “Tokunbo” or “Atohunrinwa” politician because of his extensive political activities outside the state. The terms were used to suggest that he was not deeply rooted in local politics.

Despite the perception, he credited his academic background, political connections and grassroots mobilisation for helping him overcome the challenge and win the election. He noted that he was invited to contest by former governor Niyi Adebayo, who controlled a significant part of the party structure at the time.

Even with that backing, Fayemi said his campaign team visited each of the state’s 177 wards at least three times and met key political leaders individually. He also drew support from Ekiti’s intellectual community, which gave him broader appeal among aspirants.

According to him, bold conviction and strong external networks ultimately made the difference. Fayemi served two non-consecutive terms as governor of the state between 2010 and 2022.
