The Academic Staff Union of Universities has threatened to resume its suspended nationwide strike, accusing the Federal Government and some state governments of failing to honour the 2025 agreement reached with the union.

The warning was issued in a statement by National President Prof. Chris Piwuna.

The decision followed an emergency meeting of the union’s National Executive Council. ASUU said it could activate the industrial action without further notice if its demands are not urgently addressed and that it would not accept blame for the consequences of another strike.

Outstanding issues listed by the union include three-and-a-half months of withheld salaries, unremitted pension and other third-party deductions, concerns over university autonomy, and the deteriorating welfare of academics. Lecturers, the union said, still face uncertainty over monthly salary payments.

ASUU acknowledged recent efforts by the Federal Ministry of Education to settle salaries in some federal universities of agriculture. It also praised governors who have started implementing the agreement, including those of Abia, Bauchi, Ekiti, Ogun, Benue and several others, while warning the remaining states against further delays.

The union also criticised the extension of the tenure of the Vice-Chancellor of Osun State University, describing it as contrary to the institution’s law. ASUU appealed to students, parents and other stakeholders to urge the government to resolve the issues quickly to avoid another disruption of the academic calendar.
