Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has announced a N500 million endowment fund to support the family of the late Senator Barinada Mpigi.
Speaking at a tribute session in Port Harcourt, Wike emphasized that true friendship is shown by standing by a deceased colleague’s family rather than just organizing a burial.
The Minister described the late Senator as a “dependable ally” and a fearless politician who remained loyal during periods of intense political crisis. Wike recalled how Mpigi would visit him during challenging times to offer unwavering solidarity, proving his character as a man of integrity and deep-rooted commitment to his political family.
The N500 million contribution, provided by the Rivers State Rainbow Coalition, will be used to establish a foundation for the Senator’s children and family. This initiative is designed to ensure their long-term financial stability and to preserve the legacy of a man who served his people with great distinction.
Other political leaders at the event, including representatives from the APC and the Rivers State Elders Forum, lauded Mpigi as a consummate bridge-builder. They highlighted his significant role in establishing the Federal University of Environmental Technology in Ogoni land, describing his death as a major loss to the political landscape.
Senator Mpigi’s brother, Monday Douglas Mpigi, expressed deep gratitude to Wike and the coalition for their immense kindness during the family’s period of grief.
He described the late lawmaker as the “backbone of the family” and a pillar of strength who consistently encouraged those around him to reach their potential.
The gathering concluded with a collective vow from political associates to ensure that the Senator’s contributions to Rivers State are never forgotten. By establishing this fund, the group aims to provide a safety net for the bereaved family while honoring the memory of a man known for his grassroots mobilization.
