Windstorm Wreaks Havoc in Enugu Community, Destroys 80 Buildings

Following a devastating rainstorm, the Ukete Oduma community in Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State was left in a state of crisis. The violent windstorm leveled or severely damaged at least 80 buildings, including residential homes, churches, and public schools.

This natural disaster has rendered hundreds of residents homeless and searching for immediate shelter.

The destruction extended beyond architecture, hitting the community’s infrastructure and livelihood. Power lines were pulled down, leaving the area in total darkness, while numerous economic trees and livestock were lost to the wind.

Many families were forced to take refuge in the palace of the traditional ruler, Igwe Patrick Oshiekwe, as their own roofs were completely blown off.

Igwe Oshiekwe described the incident as a hurricane-like disaster, the likes of which he had never witnessed in his lifetime. He lamented that many of the affected houses belonged to vulnerable families who now have nowhere to sleep.

The monarch made an emotional appeal to the state government and wealthy individuals to provide emergency relief to the displaced.

The President General of the community’s Town Union, Mr. Jeremiah Njoku, confirmed the massive scale of the disaster. He noted that the count of 80 buildings only included those with major structural damage, suggesting the actual impact could be even higher.

He expressed profound relief that, despite the intensity of the storm, no lives were lost.

Victims of the storm, including local residents Mr. Ernest Nweze and Chief Ifeanyichukwu Akuatuegwu, shared their heartbreak over losing property they spent years building. With the rainy season just beginning, they expressed deep fear that their remaining belongings would be further destroyed by subsequent downpours.

They are now pleading for urgent humanitarian intervention.

As of the latest reports, the community is still awaiting an official visit from disaster management teams like SEMA. Local leaders continue to call on Governor Peter Mbah and federal representatives to intervene. The community is in desperate need of building materials, food supplies, and medical aid to prevent a secondary health crisis.
