2,000 Villagers Flee Tsafe Over Reprisal Fears in Zamfara

At least 2,000 residents from several communities in the western part of Tsafe Local Government Area, Zamfara State, have abandoned their homes following credible threats of a reprisal attack by bandits.

The exodus was triggered by the sudden withdrawal of certain security personnel who had been stationed in strategic points within the villages. Residents of Kunchin Kalgo and surrounding settlements were seen on Friday morning loading their meager belongings onto motorcycles and carts, heading toward the local government headquarters in search of refuge.

The fear stems from a recent security operation where local forces successfully neutralized several bandits in the axis. However, villagers alleged that shortly after the victory, the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) and other conventional security units vacated their posts, leaving the area vulnerable.

This security vacuum has led to widespread panic, with many convinced that the bandits are currently regrouping in the nearby forests to launch a retaliatory strike on the now-defended communities.

The Chairman of Tsafe Local Government, Hon. Garba Panchase, confirmed the mass displacement but attempted to downplay the severity of the security breach. According to Panchase, the movement of the CJTF was a routine administrative measure intended for “deployment and swapping” with other units. He maintained that three heavy security machineries remain present in the area and attributed the mass flight to “rumors initiated by people who do not mean well for the government.”

Despite these official reassurances, the humanitarian situation in Tsafe is rapidly deteriorating. Displaced persons, mostly women, children, and the elderly, are arriving at the local headquarters with little more than the clothes on their backs. Local sources indicate that the influx is stretching the already limited resources of the host community, with urgent needs for food, clean water, and temporary shelter as families sleep in open spaces and school buildings.

The situation in Tsafe is part of a broader surge in insecurity across Zamfara State this week. Just days ago, on April 7, 2026, bandits on over 50 motorcycles raided the Yarkatsinan Laka community in Bungudu, resulting in the deaths of two police officers and three civilians. While the Zamfara State Police Command claims to have repelled several attacks in Maru and Bukkuyum recently, the persistent cycle of violence and the perceived inconsistency of security presence continue to drive thousands of rural Nigerians into a life of displacement.
