Nasarawa Police Neutralize Suspected Kidnapper During Highway Gun Duel

By 𝔸bdulrazak Tomiwa

The Nasarawa State Police Command has recorded a significant security breakthrough by neutralizing a suspected kidnapper during an active operation.

This success follows the strategic directives issued by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, to rid the state of criminal elements and ensure the safety of residents and travelers.

The incident occurred along the Nasarawa Eggon – Akwanga Highway, a route frequently targeted by criminals. A patrol team from the Nasarawa Eggon Division discovered an attempted kidnapping in progress near the Rice Mill area.

The operatives noticed that the suspects had used large stones to create a barricade across the highway to trap unsuspecting motorists.

As the police team approached the scene, the armed gang initiated a violent confrontation. According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ramhan Nansel, “Upon sighting the police patrol team, the hoodlums opened fire, prompting a swift and decisive response from the operatives.”

The exchange of gunfire resulted in the police gaining the upper hand over the criminals. “In the ensuing exchange of gunfire, the criminals were overpowered. One of the suspects was neutralised, while others fled into the surrounding bush with possible gunshot wounds,” Nansel explained.

Following a distress alert, the Commissioner of Police, CP Shetima Jauro Mohamed, immediately dispatched a reinforcement team to secure the highway. The injured suspect was rushed to a nearby medical facility for treatment, but he was ultimately confirmed dead by the attending doctor.

The deceased suspect was later identified as Auta Habu, a resident of a Fulani settlement (Ruga) in Gidan Waya, Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Area. Police investigations revealed that Habu had a history of involvement in several criminal activities within the state prior to the fatal encounter.

The command has reassured the public that the highway is now cleared and safe for use. However, the search for the remaining gang members continues, as the police stated, “Meanwhile, efforts are ongoing to track down and apprehend the fleeing members of the gang.”

The PPRO reiterated the command’s commitment to public safety and urged citizens to stay alert. He encouraged residents to assist the force by reporting any suspicious movements to the nearest station to help maintain the current momentum against crime.
