PDP Remains Most Structured Party Despite Setbacks, Says Ikpeazu
Former Abia State governor and Ambassador designate, Okezie Ikpeazu has said the Peoples Democratic Party remains Nigeria’s most organised political party despite recent electoral losses.
Ikpeazu, who chairs the 2026 PDP National Convention Planning and Organising Committee, made the remark on Sunday while delivering his opening address at the party’s 10th elective national convention held in Abuja.
The event, themed Inclusiveness, Unity and Renewal, is aimed at choosing new members of the National Working Committee to lead the party for the next four years.
He acknowledged that the party had suffered electoral defeats but maintained that its organisational strength and nationwide structure remain intact. He urged delegates to focus on these strengths rather than recent setbacks.
Ikpeazu recalled that the last elective convention of the party took place in October 2021 at Eagle Square in Abuja. Since then, he said, the party has experienced internal leadership challenges that tested its cohesion.
According to him, those challenges led to the intervention of the National Executive Committee at its 104th meeting in December 2025, where a National Caretaker Working Committee was established to stabilise the party.
Despite the difficulties, Ikpeazu said the PDP continues to maintain a broad national presence and remains deeply rooted across the country.
He called on party members to protect this legacy and work toward rebuilding and repositioning the party.
He described the convention as both a turning point and a necessary step toward restoring internal stability, adding that it represents a renewed commitment to the party’s founding principles of justice, equity and national unity.
Ikpeazu also commended the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for his role in sustaining the party during challenging periods, describing him as a strong pillar within the PDP. He further acknowledged the contributions of former Senate President Bukola Saraki and other party leaders in promoting dialogue during recent crises.
Addressing incoming members of the National Working Committee, Ikpeazu warned that their responsibilities would be demanding and immediate. He stressed that reconciliation within the party is essential for its survival and must be pursued without delay.
He urged them to take decisive steps to mend divisions, rebuild trust and strengthen internal democracy across all levels of the party.
Ikpeazu also called on delegates from across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to carry the message of unity and inclusiveness back to their constituencies, expressing confidence that the party can regain its footing.
