FG to Replace Khakhi with Adire Fabric in Major NYSC Overhaul
The federal government has confirmed that the iconic khaki uniform worn by members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) will be officially phased out and replaced with locally made Adire (tie-dye) fabric as part of a sweeping structural modernization.
The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, announced the uniform change during an appearance on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Thursday, July 2, 2026.
According to the minister, switching to Adire is a strategic economic move designed to boost local manufacturing, revitalize Nigeria’s textile industry, and ensure that government procurement funds are funneled directly back into the domestic economy.
Pointing out that centers like Ogun and Kwara states have vibrant textile hubs, Olawande emphasized the importance of keeping national spending within the country.
Beyond the wardrobe changes, the minister outlined several core operational adjustments approved under the new framework:
* Specialized Postings: Moving forward, corps members will no longer be randomly assigned to primary assignments. Postings will strictly align with their professional backgrounds and academic qualifications. For instance, only graduates with education-related backgrounds will be deployed to teach in schools.
* Localized Deployment for High-Risk Areas: To address persistent security challenges across the nation, the government is introducing an option to deploy prospective corps members to regions where they already studied or are deeply familiar with the local environment.
This measure aims to reduce the anxiety felt by parents and youths regarding postings to volatile areas, eliminating the need for expensive and frantic redeployment processes.
* Transition to Civilian Leadership: Olawande forcefully dismissed rumors that the military is being dropped from the scheme completely. While a civilian will now step in to head the operational leadership of the NYSC—shifting the body from military to civilian-led mobilization the military will maintain a vital presence, strictly focusing on providing tactical security support for corps members nationwide.
These monumental changes follow a comprehensive overhaul approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Monday, June 29, 2026. This marks the very first major restructuring of the NYSC since its creation 53 years ago. The FEC has already instructed the Ministry of Youth Development and the Attorney-General of the Federation to begin amending the NYSC Act to formally integrate these laws.
The ultimate goal is to transition the NYSC away from a standard mobilization group and into a skills-oriented, youth-empowerment institution designed to help drive Nigeria toward a $1 trillion economy.
