Morayo Afolabi Brown Opens Up on Career Struggles, Launch of Her Own Show

Media personality, Morayo Afolabi Brown has revealed that her entry into television hosting was unplanned, despite becoming a prominent figure in the industry.

She made this known while speaking at the Refire Conference, where she recounted her early career challenges, including self-doubt and struggles with speech.

According to her, she initially intended to work behind the scenes and had no ambition to appear on screen, citing concerns about her fluency and a tendency to stammer.

Brown explained that plans were originally in place to hire another presenter for the programme, and writer Joy Isi Bewaji was brought in for the role. However, the arrangement changed shortly before the show’s debut when the intended host stepped aside to focus on writing.

Faced with limited time and no alternative, Brown said she was compelled to step in as host, marking the beginning of her on-screen career. She added that the programme gradually gained traction and became widely recognised.

She further disclosed that her career later faced a major setback when Television Continental removed her from her role. Brown said she challenged the decision and defended her contributions to the station, leading to her reinstatement after several days, although in a reduced capacity.

Despite the demotion, she continued working and remained committed to her programme. In 2019, she stepped down from her role at the station but maintained her involvement as a contract staff member.

By 2023, she rose to a leadership position as Managing Director, a milestone she described as significant but ultimately unfulfilling.

Her career took another turn when she developed a new television concept and secured funding of 100 million naira from a partner through her company. The development prompted her to reassess her career path and pursue independent ventures.

Brown said she subsequently resigned from her position to focus on building her own platform, leading to the creation of her programme, The Morayo Show.

Reflecting on her journey, she noted that each stage of her career, including setbacks, contributed to her growth and reinforced her decision to take control of her professional direction.
