Thailand Secures Safe Passage for Oil Tankers Through Iran-Controlled Strait

By 𝔸bdulrazak Tomiwa

Thai Prime Minister, Anutin Charnvirakul has secured a deal with Iran for safe passage of Thai oil vessels through the Strait of Hormuz. This vital corridor has been paralyzed since late February due to escalating Middle East conflicts and Iranian shipping restrictions.

The agreement serves as a vital relief for energy-dependent Thailand. Under the new protocol, Thailand provides advance notice of transits, and Iranian forces ensure their safety. One Thai tanker has already successfully navigated the passage under these specific terms.

Prime Minister Charnvirakul stated the deal will prevent severe fuel shortages and stabilize the national energy supply. This diplomatic breakthrough aims to counter the domestic instability caused by regional hostilities that continue to block most other international maritime traffic.

Thailand’s Foreign Ministry achieved the exemption by emphasizing strict national neutrality. Officials successfully argued that as a non-party to the conflict, Thailand maintains a right to safe passage, distinguishing its vessels from those of “enemy” nations.

The deal follows weeks of economic pressure, including long petrol queues and a significant spike in diesel prices. The Thai government previously apologized to the public for the economic turmoil caused by the initial disruption of oil imports.

Despite this success, the Strait of Hormuz remains highly volatile with overall shipping traffic down 95% this month. While Thai tankers now have a corridor, most commercial vessels still face frequent attacks or military blockades as the war intensifies.
