A woman named Hafsatu Yusuf has tragically passed away in Kano State shortly after giving birth to quintuplets.
The delivery of the five infants—three boys and two girls—took place at the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital. While the birth was initially celebrated as a rare event, the mother’s sudden death hours later turned the occasion into a tragedy.
Following the delivery, the Kano State Ministry of Health placed the mother and her newborns under specialized care. The state government had already pledged to take over the medical expenses and welfare of the infants to assist the family. Despite these medical interventions and government support, complications arose that led to Hafsatu’s untimely demise.
Hafsatu’s husband, Salisu Nufi’u, a tricycle rider, was left devastated by the loss of his wife. He had previously expressed his gratitude for the government’s help before the tragedy occurred. Now, the grieving father faces the immense challenge of raising five newborns on his own while mourning his partner.
The state government, through spokesperson Nabilusi Na’isa, has reaffirmed its commitment to the family’s wellbeing. They emphasized that their intervention is part of a larger mission to combat maternal and infant mortality.
Officials pledged that the quintuplets will continue to receive the necessary healthcare and resources required for their survival.
Medical experts highlighted that multiple-birth pregnancies carry extreme risks and place severe physical strain on the mother. Such cases typically require intensive monitoring and complex surgical procedures to manage potential complications. Despite the efforts of the specialist medical team in Kano, the physical toll of the birth proved fatal.
This incident has sparked widespread sympathy across Nigeria, drawing attention to the country’s maternal health challenges. It serves as a somber reminder of the risks associated with high-order multiple births and the financial vulnerability of many families.
The community continues to rally around the father as he navigates this difficult period.
