FCCPC Warns Manufacturers to Label Products in English
The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission has given a clear warning to manufacturers, distributors, and importers in Nigeria.
All consumer products sold in the country must now carry labels written in English. This is to make sure that buyers can easily understand what they are buying and how to use it.
The Executive Vice Chairman of the commission, Mr Tunji Bello, made this call during an event held in Abuja to mark the 2026 World Consumer Rights Day. He explained that proper labelling in a language that people can read is very important for protecting consumers. Many Nigerians rely on these labels to know the ingredients, expiry dates, and safety information.
Without clear English labels, consumers may find it hard to make good choices or avoid harmful products. The commission believes that using English will help reduce confusion in the market. It will also make it easier for people to know their rights when something goes wrong with a product.
This directive is part of ongoing efforts to improve standards in the Nigerian market. The FCCPC wants companies to take the matter seriously and update their packaging as soon as possible. Those who fail to follow the rule may face penalties in the future.
The move has been welcomed by many consumer groups who say it will bring more transparency. As the commission continues to push for better protection, Nigerians can expect safer and more informed shopping experiences in the coming months.
