Spanish PM Warns Middle East War ‘Far Worse’ Than Iraq Invasion

By Rachel Akper

Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez has warned that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East is “far worse” than the 2003 invasion of Iraq, with potential consequences that are broader and deeper for the global economy and society.

Speaking to parliament on Wednesday, Sánchez described the war as “absurd and illegal” and “cruel,” saying it threatens to set back progress on economic, social, and environmental goals.

“This is not the same scenario as the illegal war in Iraq. We are facing something far worse. Much worse,” he said.

“Every bomb that falls in the Middle East eventually hits as we are already seeing the wallets of our families.”

The Spanish government recently approved a €5 billion ($5.8 billion) relief package aimed at cushioning the economic impact of the conflict. Measures include reductions on fuel taxes to help households cope with rising costs.

Sánchez emphasized that it is unfair for Spaniards and Europeans to bear the costs of a war they did not start.

Sánchez also confirmed that Spain would not allow the United States to use Madrid’s military bases for strikes against Iran, despite threats from Washington to sever trade relations.

A poll published earlier this month showed that 53.2% of Spaniards support the Prime Minister’s decision.

The Spanish leader drew parallels with the Iraq invasion, noting that the 2003 war failed to achieve its objectives and instead caused soaring fuel and grocery prices, a migration crisis, and jihadist attacks in Europe.

His comments also echoed domestic memory of mass protests against Spain’s involvement in Iraq, which contributed to the Socialist Party’s unexpected election win in March 2004.

Sánchez’s warning underlines growing European concerns over the Middle East conflict and its far-reaching economic and humanitarian consequences.
